The theme of Chapman’s evening is “Voices Recovered, Voices Remembered” and will include performances by the University Choir and reflections by Rabbi Arnold Rachlis of Irvine’s University Synagogue and Dr. Braunfels was half-Jewish and his music was banned as “degenerate” by the Nazis. This week the “Recovered Voices” series continues with Los Angeles Opera’s production of Walter Braunfels’ “The Birds” (1920), in its West Coast premiere. Opera revives the work of composers silenced by the Nazis. Conlon’s ongoing “Recovered Voices” project at L.A. April 20 in Chapman’s Memorial Hall as part of “An Evening of Holocaust Remembrance” program presented by the Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education and sponsored by the Lodzer Organization of California. Chapman University in Orange will bestow a Doctor of Arts degree, honoris causa, on Los Angeles Opera music director James Conlon, “in recognition of his many contributions in the field of music.”Ĭonlon’s degree will be presented to him in a ceremony at 7 p.m. ![]()
